News: InstantAction.com Coming Soon

InstantActionAnnouncement

InstantAction.com is a new game site coming soon that aims to offer lots of web-based games that don’t require any downloads. The new games are allegedly going to be arcade-centric and have top-notch content from some of the Garage Games team. A number of the games will be multiplayer. I’m betting that they’ll be using a new version of Flash that allows for streaming downloads of additional content. We’ve already seen some pretty impressive Flash gaming in the wild lately, but I’ll bet there’s more to come. The site isn’t live yet, but if you sign up at the main page you can be notified when the site goes live. Never fear because I’ve signed up and will let you know via this site.

News: Sony E3 07 News

So, coverage of Sony’s news at last. I’ll do a comparison in another post about them all.

  • PSP form factor change. I was expecting this. First off, there was a price drop which meant they were trying to increase customer base and move units in the sales channel. The PSP has also been gaining in popularity recently and finally has some good titles. Finally, a different color than Sony Black. I’ve always been interested in getting one of these, and this piques my interest more.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 is a PS3 exclusive and last in series. This will sell PS3 unitis, moreso now that it’s going to be the end of an era. Hideo Jokima has stated in the past that he wants to develop on other platforms, and it’s easier to do this without focusing on MGS as the main bread and butter for the company.
  • Killzone 2 looks really good. I’m one of the few that quite like the first game, and I’m sure I’ll like this one just as much.
  • Little Big Planet. Collaboratic world and game creation. It’s about time this hit Next Gen. I was doing this years ago in a similar fashion with friends on my old Acorn Electron for the Repton series of games. This game is one reason I’m looking at a PS3, because I can use it as a teaching tool for enhancing home schooling for the kids.
  • Infamous looks good, but also seems to be an idea that’s been done before in other ways. It’ll have to stand out on its own with something cool or it won’t sell.
  • Army of Two. The PS3 answer to Gears of War, a year late. The meter mechanic is interesting. If I play this game with Mrs Teh Bagder, you can bet I’d be invisible to everyone - she likes to aggro enemies.
  • Silent Hill V. Let me finish the first 4 first, dammit! The trailer didn’t give much away, but didn’t seem to be in the vein as existing games. The music is key to this game, and the trailer just didn’t have it.
  • Sixaxis gets rumble. About time. Stupid Sony and their Stupid “Old Gen” technology smoke screen for not wanting to pay royalties. Bad Sony, no market share for you.

That’s pretty much it. I’ll still need to post on game news, as well as do a brief recap of E3 and my thoughts on it.

News: Nintendo E3 07 News

A little late, but here’s my thoughts on the Nintendo announcements.

  • Online play becomes a reality with FIFA and Madden. About fricking time, although these aren’t the titles that “hardcore” gamers really want multiplayer. It’s a start though, and perhaps there’s a lobby/community system being developed for the games. We can hope.
  • New Wii controllers: one you can shoot, and the other you stand on. The innovation of the Wii Remote is set to expanded by the first party. I could have used the Wii Zapper last night when at Scooters trying to play Splinter Cell Double Agent.
  • Super Mario Galaxy out on November 3rd. SCORE! That’s one of the Wii-Vent ‘07 titles we want.
  • Mario Kart (Wii). To be expected. Hope it’s better than Double Dash. That was a horrid game.
  • The Check Mii Out channel. Am I Hot or Not for the Wii generation? Just wait till the Bagder army invades this one!
  • 100 titles in the works for the Wii! Bloody norah! Yay! Although, I’d like to see what they are before selling off one of the kids to fund the future Wii habit I’m sure to develop.

News: Sony + Hyperbole = No Change There Then

At the Sony Keynote speech, Jack Tretton announced that Sony and NCSoft have struck a deal to create titles for the PlayStation Network:

“Let’s start with our partners games first. We’re providing them with the tools they need to develop great games for the PS3. We’re very pleased to announce that NCSoft will be joining the PlayStation camp. You probably know them from Lineage, City of Heroes, and Guild Wars. Very soon, they’ll be brin[g]ing that to the PS3 exclusively … Only the PSN can support the types of games NCSoft has become famous for.” (Joystiq)

Hmm. I see a pattern here. Let’s analyze it using the Underpants Gnomes Analogy:

  1. Sony steals the online community idea from Microsoft
  2. Sony steals the innovation for controllers from Nintendo
  3. Sony steals the idea of multiplayer networked games from PCs?
  4. Profit!

Ah, Sony, can’t come up with any new ideas of your own? Still need to steal thunder from others? NCSoft became famous for making great games on the PC platform, not the PlayStation one. I know they share a capital letter, but they’re not the same thing. Yes, yes, I know. The PlayStation is more than just a games machine - it’s the holy grail of computing. Whatever.

More to the point, it seems that there’s a quantum quandary, a paradox if you will. If the PSN network can only support the games that NCSoft has become famous for, then why am I able to play the games (on PC) that NCSoft has become famous for, without having access to the PSN. Unless of course, the PSN network is already in place and I’ve been using it all along? The mind boggles. Quantum entanglement ensues. My cat is both alive and dead at the same time.

Sony once again has raised hyperbole to an art form. I’d salute Jack Tretton and Sony, but I’m too busy trying to pick my jaw up off the ground.

News: Guild War Expansion & Bonus

Image courtesy of the Guild Wars Website.

As many know, the Mrs and I play Guild Wars. We’re anxiously awaiting the Eye of the North Expansion from NCSoft. The expansion is the first true expansion for the game and requires ownership of at least one of the previous games (Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall) and it conjoins them all in a very cool new campaign. It’s due to be released August 31st and will have the retail price of $39.99. A little steep, but it’ll be worth it.

Most people would buy it through retail. NCSoft have got in on the digital store pimping route by offering a cool incentive. If you buy an content online at the online store for the game between July 5th and October 31st this year, you’ll get a special Mission Pack Promotion which gives 4 free bonus missions that are tied to the game world’s history.

Needless to say we’ll be buying the expansions, and most likely from the store, because we love playing Guild Wars.

If you’re a GWer, then look for Daryan Banobar or Faeryn Medb (the Mrs) online on the American servers). Tuesday Night after 10pm is GW Night in the Bagder household, so we might catch you online.

News: My Thoughts on Microsoft at E3 07

First off, here's my thoughts on Microsoft's announcements at E3 07.

  • Blue and pink controllers for the 360. What the hell? I mean, c'mon! Where's the Zune brown controller? The green Halo 3 controllers looks pretty nifty.
  • New Viva Pinata based around mini games. Is this 360's Raving Rabbids? Certainly this will be more appealing to kids than a direct sequel, but Microsoft haven't really been focusing on targeting kids for game. Perhaps this is why Nintendo is in the lead?
  • Halo 3 Special Edition Console. Who'da thunk it? I mean, they never did this for Halo 2. Oh wait. I wonder if the overheating problems are fixed, because if this baby gets the Red Rings of Death, there's going to be anarchy and lawlessness in the streets. This thing will sell, but you can bet it's going to be more expensive than the Elite.
  • Blue Dragon. I'm pretty hot for this game and can't wait to play it.
  • Age of Halos, erm Halo Wars, looks pretty sweet, but Starcraft II is going to kick Master Chief in the helmet in a big way, although Halo Wars does look pretty damn impressive. I just can't consider playing an RTS with a controller. Mouse and keyboard all the way, baby. I'll wait for the PC version, which will be released about 5 years from now.
  • I want to have Bioware's babies. Mass Effect is the game that could force me to break my Don't Buy At Release Time edict. That game looks fantastic!
  • Europeans finally get the Elite. It'll have the standard 2 year warranty required by European law. I wonder how many of these will break before the warranty gets upgraded.
  • Viva Pinata and Gears of War for PC. Hell yeah! And they'll run on Windows XP and Vista. I guess they're not going to do any multiplayer because Games For Windows Live only works on Vista. I wonder how they'll fix that? If they make GFWL available for Vista then they fix a major problem but show just how much they hung Shadowrun and Halo 2 out to dry.
  • Lots more XBLA content. No! Say it ain't so!
  • Disney movies in HD on the Xbox. Meh, this is what physical media is for. DVDs FTW.
  • Xbox 360 thumb board for typing while holding the controller. Very neat.

What is interesting is that there's no price drop mentioned, and probably not much was said about the new warranty. Microsoft would want that out of the way so they could do promotion rather than damage control.

It'll be interesting to see what Nintendo and Sony have got coming up.
