Free: Red Alert

FreeRedAlert

In addition to offering the original Command & Conquer, updated to run on current machines, EA is also offering free downloads of the first game in the Red Alert series for C&C. If you missed this game first time round, you really need to play, even if it’s just to watch FMV of Kari Wuhrer playing Tanya. As usual with all the C&C games, scenery is chew and there’s lot of ham acting, but that’s half the charm of the game. The site also includes updated instructions on how to install and run it on both Windows XP and Vista.

Free: GTA 1, 2 And Wild Metal

RockStarFreeGTA

Not quite sure how this passed me by, but Rockstar are offering some updated and free versions of classic games for download from their website, namely the first two GTA games and Wild Metal. You need to supply some personal information first, but then you get to download the games and play them to your heart’s content. I remember playing GTA when it was first out, and the franchise has come a long way since then. Windows only.

MMO Monday: Puzzle Pirates

Puzzle Pirates
Guybroosh is waiting to empty his own bilge, and will as soon as the restroom is free.

Yar! Bilge them boats and earn some coins! Puzzle Pirates is an unlikely cross between an MMO and lots of casual games like Tetris and Bejeweled that turns out to be a lot of fun. The object of the game is to eventually end up with your own ship and booty and take on lots of missions. The game starts off with a great tutorial and soon you’ll be playing games and earning coins. Yar!

Puzzle Pirates is a free to play pay-shop-supported great kid-friendly MMO game that runs either in your browser or as a downloaded executable. It uses Java, so it will download a Java virtual machine, but it runs great on older hardware. We’ve got it downloaded to an older 800 Mhz laptop that we’ve had hanging around as a backup computer, and it runs just fine and dandy on that. You can play the game to win coin for all your goodies such as outfits, houses and ships, or you can use the pay shop to quickly get you to where you want to be. Most games take about 5-10 minutes to play and get you around 15-30 coins, so saving up can take a bit of time. However if there are a group of you playing, you’ll soon be able to pool your coins to get what you ultimately want: a ship. Of course, you need to get a few other things too, such as a Captain’s Badge, a crew and some other items.

If you’re looking for a whimsical game that appeals to not only the casual player but to kids, this is something you should look into: the price is right, and the gameplay is fun.

Web: The Eyeballing Game

Eyeballing Game

Think you’ve got what it takes to be able to eyeball exact spaces? The Eyeballing Game gives you the opportunity to find out if you do. The game is surprisingly addictive and you’ll find yourself playing it a lot.

The image above is actually one I managed to score. Of course, all the other scores were well off the mark, but I got lucky with that one, no?

Battlefield Heroes: Death By Kiltie!

BattlefieldHeroesScots

Now, THIS game I’m looking forward to. I’ve been following the development of Battlefield Heroes for some time, particularly because it’s going to be free (ad and micro-transaction supported) and it’s been getting a lot of good press from the GFW guys. The fact that I get to put my guy in a kilt and descend upon the enemy totting automatic weapons is just pure icing on the cake. Finally, a game that takes the concept of clans seriously!

Web Wednesday: Facebook Dungeons & Dragons Tiny Adventures

FacebookDungeons&Dragons

I’ve found myself addicted to playing the new Dungeons & Dragons Tiny Adventures that’s available on Facebook. I tend to leave it running in the background while I do other thins on the Interwebs, flipping back to its tab to check my current quest status. It’s absolutely nothing like sitting around a table with your friends, but it’s fun in a online Tunnels & Trolls-type way. You can help to buff your friends in their quests, but it’s really missing a multi-player component, even if that component is just multiple people going on the quest together and playing through turns. It’d also be improved if you could trade items with other players, because I end up selling a lot of stuff that I’ve got duplicates of. Still, it’s a lot of fun, and keeps me amused while sitting at work, at least, when the servers aren’t crashing because there’s too many people playing it.

Free Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (PC)

PsiOpsMindgateConspiracy

If you’re interested in getting your hands on PSI-OPS: The Mindgate Conspiracy, you can currently get it for free from Fileplanet. This is the ad-supported version of the game, but it’s a really good game and worth it. If you haven’t played it already, I recommend downloading it. I’ve got the Playstation 2 version of the game and plan to start playing it as soon as I’ve completed the games I’m working through.

Return Of The Red Menace

RedAlert3

I’ve always been a fan of the Command & Conquer games, and I’ve spent many hours in the past playing both C&C and Red Alert, although I have to say that I’ve always been more partial to Red Alert. It’s been a long time since I played either game, but this trailer makes me not only want to pick up the C&C games again, but also to get the new Command & Conquer Red Alert 3 when it comes out.

Yes, the cinematics are still cheesy, but that’s part of the charm of the C&C series. There’s some top-notch names involved in this game. George Takei, Tim Curry, Jonathan Pryce, Kelly Hu. I mean, DAMN! Add in time travel and Japan becoming the major new threat and you’ve got another game that might just keep me from doing anything productive for the next year or so.

I think I need to go back and start playing the C&C games through in order. Luckily, Electronic Arts recently released the ISO files for the first C&C game for free. They’re no longer hosting the ISOs at the main website, but they’re still available at Fileplanet.
