Play: Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance II PS2

It’s been a while since I’ve felt like sitting down and playing one of the consoles that we have in our house. Lately, much of my gaming has been on my iPod Touch or on my MacBook (and even then only when booted into Windows XP at Boot Camp). I’ve got lots of games for lots of platforms, but I usually don’t have a great deal of time to sit down and play games at any one time. When I get home from work at night, I’m usually to tired to play video games; most of the video games I like require you to engage your brain because of either gameplay of storyline. Casual games are fine, but I tend to prefer long-form games which require you to think and have a story attached to them. The problem is that I’ve not really had more than a half hour at a time where it’s been quiet enough for me to play, and I’ve been awake enough to play. Last night was the exception.

I managed to sit down and play some Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II on my PS2. I started playing around 7pm or so and played through (with some little interruption here and there with putting the rest of the family to bed) until around 11:30pm, which is when I managed to complete the Bloodmire Manor quest. The last time I played this game through, I didn’t get much further than that quest because I was distracted by new and shinier things as well as running out of personal time to play games.  I also managed to get up today and play for a little while, and I’m hoping to get some more game time in today. This, in spite of the fact that the Wintersday Event is running again over the weekend for Guild Wars, and I’ve got many other games that I should be completing, rather than starting one over.  Not to mention things all the other things I should be doing like housework etc.

Of course, playing this game made me realize how much I loved the Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale series on PC, and I’m feeling that I might want to get those installed at some point and complete them. Those games are perfect for pick up play and when you can easily steal 15-30 mins of play time, which makes them perfect rewards for getting studying and other chores out of the way. The problem is that I spend so much time in OS X these days and don’t want to boot into Windows to play games. I might have to install WINE just so that I can play the other Baldur’s Gate games. However, that’s probably a bad idea.

  1. Hi! This is Tad Williams. Please excuse the interruption to your regularly scheduled bloggery. People here have mentioned my work, or love fantasy and science fiction, so I just wanted to pop in and say that anyone interested in reading a chapter from my new book, SHADOWRISE, should drop an email to:

and we'll send one to you. We won't do anything rotten with your email address, either, we promise. This is real!
