Yet another RTS set in the annals of history? Not quite, because this game spins the Hero in RTS games a little more than others do and allows you the ability to play from the field of battle directly from his viewpoint.

The game is balanced out by using a system of recruitment points which you use to build your army as you wage war, and these points rely on what lands and assets you control. The more you control, the greater the reinforcements that you can have come to your aid just as your opponent’s enemy is mowing down all of your advance troops and about to make it into the middle of your own lands.

While not as epic as other games in the genre, for the price it’s a hard bargain to beat if you like your RTS games. $3.99 will score you a fair amount of game time, so you’ll get your money’s worth with this game easily.

Freebies: PAX Keynote by Wil Wheaton

PAX2007PennyArcade

I’m a big fan of Penny Arcade, and as much as I wanted to go to this years PAX event, there was no way I was going to be able to for many thousands of reasons. Next year perhaps. Anyway, this year’s Keynote was given by none other than Wil Wheaton, and it was quick frankly brilliant. It’s certainly rated MA, as he says in his opening, but you realize that before he hits the disclaimer. If you want to listen to to it, then check out the freely available speech from the guys behind Gabe & Tycho.

Free: Bioshock Art Book

CultOfRaptureHeader

BigDaddySmall Love Bioshock, but didn’t buy the expensive edition that comes with the beautiful art book? You can download a PDF version of the artbook for FREE from the Cult of Rapture Website. You’ll want to download the high-res version (75Mb) and not the lo-res version (15Mb); The book is simply stunning and makes me jealous that I’m a pretty crap artist. Screenshots just don’t do this book justice, and if you were on the edge about buying this game, this may just tip you over because it shows you how many of the characters developed in concept from simple ideas to finished products (such as the Big Daddies starting life as Mr. Bubbles!). If it does, you can pick the game up for the Xbox 360 at GoGamer.com for $57.90, or for your Vista Windows PC for $46.90

Deals: Amazon Deal of the Day 29th August 2007 Sonic The Hedgehog (Xbox 360)

AmazonDotD082907

Sale Price: $25.99

MSRP: $39.99 (Save 35%)

Shipping: FREE

If you’re a fan of the little blue ball of fast-moving fur that is Sonic then you’ll no doubt want to pick this game up right away so you can have some high speed hi-jinks on your next gen game system. Although not the best game in the franchise (Metacritic scores it 46) it is one of the better games (and definitely no Shadow the Hedgehog) and allows you to play in 3D on your shining non-Red Ring of Death hardware, and at least it’s cheaper than the PS3 version. The CGI cut-scenes in-game are pretty impressive and have that sort of Final Fantasy-esque look that almost every game seems to go for these days, whilst the soundtrack to the game has that hard-rocking guitar-wailin’ sound that is synonymous with recent Sonic games. I’ve never been a big fan of Sonic like my sister was (she played Sonic almost every day for 2 years on her Sega Genesis system), but I’m actually pretty interested in picking this game up simply because it looks like fun, although I can’t quite bring myself to call Dr. Robotnik by his “new” name of Dr. Eggman.

Deals: Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive & 8 Movies

Amazon8HDDVDDeal

Amazon.com is currently doing a deal where if you buy the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player for $179.99 you can get 8 HD movies for free. This is a pretty sweet deal indeed, but it finishes on October 31st, 2007 so you’ve only got a limited time to take advantage of it. The HD-DVD drive itself comes with King Kong, and you get to add two movies for free at the special ordering page - the cost of the additional two movies is credited at checkout. You then download a rebate form for another 5 movies and mail it in with your UPC from the HD-DVD player box once it arrives. There’s quite a few excellent movies in the selection available, so you should have no trouble finding some movies you like. With Paramount recently announcing full support for HD DVD movies over Blu-Ray you’ll have a good selection of movies in the future, and have access to plenty of HD content on your Xbox 360. If you’ve been waiting for the best deal for this drive, this is it! Buy five today!

Administration: Post & Site Changes

Sorry I’ve not kept the blog updated over the past week or two. Lots of “Life Gets Interesting” moments happening at the moment and interrupting me all over the place. You could make a film about my life and call it “Bagder, Interrupted”.

I’m not really as happy with the new site redesign as I thought I’d be, so I’m going to make a couple of changes. One of the first changes is that I’m going to be revising the placement of advertising on the site, and most likely chopping a lot of it off. What I’ll be doing instead is linking to specific deals in specific posts, rather than just taking up screen real estate with banner ads.

Also, instead of posting lots of deals in a single post, I’m going to start breaking them up into other posts. There are a couple of reasons for this:

  • It allows me to go more in-depth into the actual deal instead of just listing a product, a price and a link. This way you’ve got some idea of what the deal is instead of having to click on the link.
  • Deals will be posted as soon as they become live instead of by a set time in the morning (which was by 9am). This makes it easier for me to update the site through the day with deals I come across that post late (such as those at Buy.com).

I’ll be modifying the number of deals that I post to those that I think are actually of interest to regular visitors to the site (all twenty or so of you).

I’ll also be removing the click-through “[Read more ?]” splits from future posts; the main reason I had introduced them was so I could track individual views of stories. Being honest, they annoy me when I visit sites, so I want to get shot of them on my own site.

By making these changes to the posts, there’s going to be more posts going up throughout the day, which means that the front page, which currently shows seven posts, will end up being cycled through a lot faster. I’m changing the front page to show twelve articles instead. If you don’t already subscribe to the RSS feed, I encourage you to do so to allow you to stay up to date with all the posts instead of having to visit the front few pages.

Feedback is encouraged.
