Opine: Starcraft II for PC at Next Gen Prices

While browsing the EB Game website, I came across a page detailing the pre-release for Starcraft II. The release date is 10/1/08, so it’s about 14 months away from right now. I expected that. What I didn’t expect was the price.
$49.99!
Let me repeat that.
$49.99!
That’s truly a Next Gen price! It seems a little high for me and the price might change a little, but I’m totally unaccustomed to paying $50 for a Windows PC game. There’s a disturbing trend appearing with regards to PC games in that some select titles are going above the normal $29.99 retail insertion price. When you get to $39.99 you better be offering a lot of additional content. For $49.99 the game better be giving me a kiss and making me breakfast in the morning.
In saying that, that’s the retail price for all the Guild Wars games that have been out so far, and we have double copies of all three games, but I’ve never paid full price for each of those. I’ll do what I normally do and find a good deal on StarCraft II when it comes out, and then I’ll post it here. After I buy my copy.

There are few games out there that you can certifiably say that they will deliver the kind of fun for that price, Starcraft II would be one of them. I think Blizzard’s stuff has always been at that point, and I think I remember when Diablo II came out that it was even higher. Maybe $59.99 for the regular version and $79.99 for the Collector’s Box? (They were the first to jump on that bandwagon).
I’m with you, I know I’ll find that game under $50, but the bang will be worth it.
I think SC2 will deliver without a doubt, but it’s still a high price. See, this is one thing about being a Behind The Curve Gamer (BTCG); I’ll wait till the price drops in about 6-12 months and get it cheaper. In fact, GamePolitics just had an article about games dropping majorly in price within 8 months. I’m putting an entry together on it.
