Play: Peggle, Crack For Gamers

500k Peggle Shot by 5 Year Old

One of the games that we play a lot of in the Bagder household is Peggle. Above is a screen shot of the 500k+ single shot that he managed to create last week. He’s 5 years old.

Here’s a YouTube video of a chap scoring the best score ever seen so far: 1.7 million on the same board that my son played. Absolutely awesome to see.

I think I have a future Peggle Grandmaster in the making in the family…

Play: Let Me Count The Ways I Love (To Pwn) You

PwnedSpyVsSpy

You know how you can tell that I love my wife? I passed up a chance to get a second hand copy of Rayman Raving Rabbids for the PS2 to pick up Spy Vs Spy for the Xbox. She's been wanting to play Spy Vs Spy for the longest time and it's something she comments on every now and again. I thought about buying it for her and surprising her on her birthday (coming up soon), Mother's Day (already passed), our wedding anniversary (already passed) and then decided I didn't need a reason to buy it other than it was on sale, and I could get it then and there. Because of the store's 2 for 1 deal coupon I also picked up Justice League Heroes as well. Not bad for $15, tax not included.

I'm just hoping Raving Rabbids is still there on Tuesday so I can pick it up then, although I might just hit the local store tomorrow with another coupon and get the game tomorrow because I can.

Adminstration: Empty Days & Site Features

First off, I'm considering adding a couple of specific features on Tuesdays and Thursdays. As I already have some regular content going up on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, I thought that perhaps adding two more features to the other weekdays would be something of interest.

Retro Tuesdays will be a look back at the games I've played in the past. This will include classic PC and 8-bit games, as well as games that aren't really played often today even if they have a loyal following. These articles will be a little maudlin, but it's a catharthis for me to post this stuff on the web.

Behind The Curve (BTC) Thursdays will follow in the vein of my God of War review and look at a game that I've got in my collection and haven't either played in a while or touched at all, and believe me, I've got enough of these! I plan to take a single game and spend some time playing it at the weekend and over the beginning of the week and then post a review of it.

The lineup is now:

  • MMO Mondays
  • Retro Tuesdays
  • Web Wednesdays
  • BTC Thursdays
  • Flash Fridays

I'm thinking about adding in something for board/card/RPGs at the weekend, but I don't want to add it just yet until I see how these changes go first.

The site redesign isn't coming as quickly as I hoped. I'm stuck on a particular part, which is creating an iconified cartoon badger for the logo. Darn my bad art skills. See, this is why I write, and don't draw. Of course, I should just cheat and open up a 3d design program and do it there, but that would require effort. The redesign will happen piecemeal, but I'm going to at least change the layout to use the full screen instead of a set width with the modified default theme that I'm currently using.

I'm also going to start adding links that are in-story in a list at the end of story to make it easier to find then, particularly on longer articles. I'm just experimenting, but we'll see how that works.

I do want to know what you'd like to see on the site though. As I've mentioned, I don't want to nor can I compete with Kotaku, Joystiq and the ilk, but I'd like to think that I can at least offer something more than just the deals I'm posting. Let me know what you think in this thread or by e-mail.

Administration: Site Stats

Just thought I’d let current visitors know about some of the stats for the site.

I’m using a number of analysis tools to track information including Feedburner, Google Analytics, the server logs and some other tools. So far, since launching the site, I’ve had 517 unique non-search engine/crawler visitors to the site with most of the traffic coming from the United States; 90% of it in fact. 10% come from Europe, and the rest from worldwide. As the blog is mostly US-centric in its deals, that’s not a surprise. I would like to be able to list deals in other locations, such as Europe and Asia, and am looking into options for doing that.

Search engine traffic accounts for around 52% of all visits at the moment, and usually these hits are the result of some item that I’m listing on the daily deals. This isn’t too bad a thing, but it’s a bit high for my liking. Then again, the blog is pretty young at the moment, so there’s room for the numbers to change.

There’s about 12 RSS subscribers at any one time. About 18% of visitors return to the site, so that’s not too bad at all, with a number of people visiting 10 times or more since the site was launched. I think that’s encouraging and accounts for about 5% of traffic, with that 5% tending to visit every couple of days. This means that at least 35 or so people (all traffic included) are getting good use out of the site, making me think that this is just me shouting into cyberspace for no reason :D

I’d like to increase traffic to the site add more content, and I’m going to post about that in another entry to get your feedback. I’ll take a look at site traffic in a month or so and post an update and compare it to the current stats.

Freebie: Free Star Wars PocketModel Sample

It seems that Wizkids are offering free samples of the Star Wars PocketModel ships at various retailers. If you visit this part of their site and input your zip code, it’ll tell you the retailers that are giving away free models. You’ll have to print off the coupon that’s on the next page and take it with you. Each Sample Kit contains 3 ships and 2 cards. US only I’m afraid.
