Flash Friday: Battle Dawn

BattleDawn

Battle Dawn, by TacticSoft Ltd, is testament to what can be done with Flash. This game is huge! The object is the game is to become the supreme omnipotent godlord of all that you survey on a destroyed Earth while fobbing off the other players that are trying to do the same. You'll need to use all your wiles as well as your talent for lying/diplomacy to allow you to succeed. The game requires teamwork for you to really get anywhere, but like most other civilization/power building games, you'll need to balance keeping your friends and enemies close to you.

The game is free to play, although you do need to register an account, and it's supported by a very active forum. It's turn based (using ticks which are equivalent to about an hour each) and runs in real time even when you're not logged in, so you can set up some build and command orders and step away from it. This makes it an ideal short attention game because you don't need to devote hours of play at one time to it.

Flash Friday: Flash Element

Flash Element

Flash Element, by Novel Concepts, allows you to relive the days of 8-bit Warcraft in an altogether new way. The object of the game is to stop various marauding beasties and people from making their way around the maze and back out again. You do this by strategically placing towers with arrows and cannons so that you can blow anything nearby into smithereens. As the levels progress, this becomes progressively harder depending upon your initial tower builds. You can upgrade your towers and defenses and perform additional research to get better weaponry.

If you find yourself jonesing for some classic Warcraft-inspired action, then get your orc on at the above link.

Flash Friday: Bloons

bloons

Bloons by Ninja Kiwi allows you to get your dart-throwing monkey on. Each level has balloons in various strategic positions and you have to attempt to pop as many as the target amount for the screen. You have five darts to do this, and if you succeed you get to go to the next level. There are 50 levels for you to work your way through, so this is a nice coffee and pretzels game for the office during downtime.

The Ninja Kiwi site has a bunch of other games you can play including More Bloons, the follow-up.

PS: You can cheat by enabling unlimited darts, but that's for complete n00bs.

Flash Friday: Get The Glass

Get The Glass Loading Screen

Got Milk? Get The Glass is a very well put together marketing game for the California Milk Processor Board. Your mission is to help the Adachi Family go through five regions on the game board, break into Fort Fridge and get the glass that allows them to get milk. Chasing you is Fort Fridge Security, and you must use your canny wiles to break the law and get your milk or rot in Milkatraz. The game is stunningly beautiful, using the kind of pre-rendered graphics that you expect to see in CGI movies such as Meet the Robinsons and The Incredibles. As you roll the dice and land on spaces, you'll get to draw Fortune (bonuses), Misfortune (bad things)  and Master Mind (answer a question to proceed) cards to allow you to outrun Fort Fridge Security. Some squares that you'll land on will have you play some mini-games which are quite fun in themselves. If caught, then you're taken to Milkatraz so you can serve your time. At this point, you can also try to escape, or you can e-mail a friend to bust you out of prison. This last option is a really nice gimmick and something that adds to the game, assuming that your friend is willing to help you out right then and there and you want to keep the game on.

As this game is so beautiful, I had to include a couple of extra screen shots so you can truly see what the game looks like.

Flash Friday: Blocky

Blocky

Blocky is a fun variant of games made popular by Tetris and its ilk, and published by Wild Snake Software. The object is to make blocks where each corner is the same color so that you capture all the unhappy faces. Every time you clear a board, you get a new board with even more smaller cubes that you have to clear. There's some strategy involved, particularly when it comes to clearing that one last combination on the screen that just won't shift until you have to select already converted cubes which reset to all you to capture the other blocks you need. Lots of lunch time fun with this game.
