Freebie: StarGate Adventure

StarGate_Adventure

While on the subject of StarGate, there's an excellent AGS-based freeware adventure called Stargate Adventure that you should play if you're a fan of old skool Lucasarts-style adventure games.

The game allows you to play each of the main characters in the show (and all are well-captured via the dialog between characters) as you seek to first get back from the planet you start out on, and then do what SG-1 does best: save the universe from the bad guys!

The best place to get the game is from Home of the Underdogs.

Play: StarGate Online

Stargate Online Logo

I'm a huge Stargate fan, and a huge trading card game fan. Sony Online Entertainment have managed to mix both of these together to make Stargate Online. You can mix it up with SG-1 and the Goauld online with 4 starter decks (Daniel Jackson, Jack O'Neill, Samantha Carter, and Teal'c), and you can get into the game for free by downloading the Windows-only client and playing the tutorials and a few practice games with live players.

Unlike many physical trading card games, having access to this client offers you two things:

  1. You don't really need to spend any money to see if the game is of interest to you.
  2. You don't have to try and find someone else locally to play with to get started.

Those are the two major drawbacks to starting any trading card game, and they can be big drawbacks depending upon your location and friends' interests.

Additional packs for online play cost the same as physical packs for the game, but you can also get special promotion packs to unlock special online play cards. There's a trend right now for a lot of physical trading card ames to move online, just like Magic The Gathering, and Pirates of the Spanish Main! It's not necessary a bad thing, because it allows you to overcome distance and physicality to be able to play the game.

I've downloaded the game client and I'm going to give it a whirl, so I may see you online.

Pimpage: Gamer’s Pouch

Gamer's Pouch is a rather nifty website which allows you to keep track of your gaming collection online, and to see what others have also collected. It true Web 2.0 fashion, it allows for individuals that sign up to the sign to update game entries and build the already extensive database.

Sure, a number of other sites offer the same kind of functionality, such as Gamespot, but they're top-heavy with graphics, adverts and in-your-face Flash. If you want a simple, clean tool to track your game collection, you should check out Gamer's Pouch.
